Dr. Chuck Rice
Anyone age 50 or more has seen the climate change in their lifetime. Young people age 20 have seen extreme weather events their entire life.
What will the changing climate mean for the Flint Hills? The tallgrass? How will it affect the lives and livelihoods of FlintHills ranchers? What changes must be made to adapt?
Kansas State University is a leader in climate research, particularly as it pertains to agriculture and grasslands.
Dr. Chuck Rice is a Distinguished University Professor at K-State and holds the Vanier University Professorship at Kansas State University. He was a co-winner of a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 for his work on the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. He will discuss “Climate Change: Testing the Resilience of Flint Hills Prairies.” There will be time for questions and conversation following his remarks.
Recently, Dr. Rice’s research has focused on soil and global climate change, including C and N emissions in agricultural and grassland ecosystems, and soil carbon sequestration and its potential benefits to the ecosystem. Dr. Rice is one of five team leaders for a $20 million Kansas NSF EPSCoR project researching global climate change and renewable energy research. He leads the group that will use climate modeling strategies for adaption and mitigation.
