Artist Susan White will demonstrate the process she uses to create a sculpture from the thorns of a honey locust tree, one of the most reviled trees in the Flint Hills.
In Susan’s hands, the thorns’ inherent geometry shapes the work as she carefully uses different combinations to achieve an interesting composition. Attendees are invited to bring a thorn for Susan to use in the process of making the artwork. The collaboration of community and artist will be the beginning of a “community sculpture” that Susan will continue the following day, as Carol Blocksome discusses invasive species in the Flint Hills.
The finished work will remain in the gallery throughout White’s exhibit: Landscape/Skyscape: Meditations in Thorn Works and Burn Drawings
