John Depew at Volland

2022 Kansas Mandolin Champion

Saturday, February 10 | 7pm

Depew doesn’t care much for big cities or the TV.

Instead, the central-Kansas native travels, writes and performs music for fun. The full range of Depew’s skills – which were fostered at an early age and inspired by his father’s own musical pursuits – include mandolin, claw-hammer banjo, bouzouki, and acoustic guitar.

In November 2023 Depew wrote in a Substack post “I’ve seen firsthand the role that live music can have in building community.” This speaks to the content in Depew’s bluegrass and folk tunes, all of which are original. Known for “taking the familiar into unfamiliar territory” (Ken Baker, Radio Kansas), Depew’s songs speak on parenthood, mental health, and philosophy, among other topics.

Depew’s performance at Volland comes on the heels of a productive 2023, filled with performances, a new album Yellow Threads, and a commitment in June to make music full-time. Depew was a Walnut Valley Festival New Song Showcase winner in 2021 and the Kansas State Mandolin Champion in 2022.

Join us on February 10th to enjoy Depew’s poetic, moving music. Doors will open at 6pm with the concert to begin at 7pm. Depew will perform in the Volland gallery, which will be showing work by Oklahoma artist Sarah Hearn.
